Women Developing Their Characters: An Argument for Protagonist Diversity Beyond the Audience Surrogate

Almost everyone loves to project themselves into a good fantasy from time to time, whether it be through a video game, book, television show or just in our own minds. Some media, such as video games, make this process very easy by putting the player in the protagonist’s shoes throughout the story. In literature, the easiest way to accomplish this effect is to use what theorists call an audience surrogate. Audience surrogates appear throughout literature, but some popular examples include Dr. Watson from the Sherlock Holmes stories, Nick Carraway from The Great Gatsby, and Bella Swan from Twilight.

Women Writing Horror Rekindled My Love for the Genre

In January of 2019, a friend told me about a Women in Horror book club being hosted by a new local independent bookstore (www.whittybooks.com). Until that moment, I did not realize how much I had been missing reading horror. Somewhere along the way, I had become disenchanted with the genre. I was not entirely sure I wanted to join another book club, as the ones in my past generally involved members who would not even read the book to discuss (insert β€œI joined book club to drink wine” jokes here, because it is a fairly accurate description of some of the members). But, I decided to give it a chance and I found a community I did not even know I was missing.

When We No Longer Need WIHM, I Will Rejoice

Here’s something I will say, quite regularly, and will absolutely always stand by. Women have always been part of Horror. Some of (though not the first) the first horror novels were written by women – Ann Radcliffe’s The Italian was published in 1796, inspired by The Castle of Otranto (1764) by Horace Walpole, and of course Frankenstein is still a hugely popular classic, written by Mary Shelley. Even some of the classics contain elements of horror, seeping into novels penned by women, because let’s face it, a woman’s life contains a multitude of horrors. Who can ever forget the imagery of a woman trapped in an attic, simply because she is unwell, while her husband brings in a new, younger woman?

Disclaimer:

We received this article anonymously for our consideration. While it is more in the realm of journalism, given the rise of popularity of cults in film, and as a popular topic in the horror community, we felt this had relevance connecting dark fiction genre and current events. We feel that this shines a spotlight on how people process a lot of difficult topics through the horror genre in books an film. We also felt it pertinent to highlight the fact that the danger of misinformation is real and indoctrination into cults can happen to anyone, and that education and socioeconomic backgrounds are NOT deciding factors; anyone and everyone is vulnerable. We encourage our readers to think critically, stay informed via multiple streams of information, and to seek help via the guidance of a counselor, therapist, or other pertinent authority as needed when in crisis.
